  Prima fase della gestione di un fondo o di un portafoglio. In questa fase vengono selezionate le categorie di attività finanziarie nelle quali investire. Si scelgono le quote di investimento nei diversi settori azionari, le quote da dedicare ai titoli a reddito fisso a breve e lunga scadenza. Il processo di asset allocation si basa ampiamente su analisi macroeconomiche volte a prevedere l'andamento dei tassi di interesse e dell'economia in generale. Il passo successivo è quello dello stock picking, ovvero della selezione dei singoli titoli.
